Engineering Manager, Services

About the role

Slice builds the backend systems, APIs, integrations and operational capabilities behind its restaurant platform, serving more than 15,000 independent restaurants. It is looking for a high-agency Engineering Manager who stays close to technology, product and customers, is accountable for team performance and impact, and leads engineers working on services that power key Slice experiences. The team collaborates across the US, Canada, UK and North Macedonia.

Key responsibilities

• Own customer and business outcomes, partnering with Product, Design, Data and Operations to define success by measurable value.
• Lead technical direction: guide architecture and engineering decisions across the services, balancing speed, reliability, simplicity and long-term system health.
• Build a high-agency team: give engineers context, decision boundaries and ownership, and remove blockers.
• Raise execution standards, reduce unnecessary ceremony and use customer feedback, product data, incidents and operational metrics to judge the team's work.
• Hire and retain engineers, coach across experience levels, and address underperformance clearly and promptly.
• Build strong relationships with other engineering, product and business leaders, and resolve disagreements constructively.

Required profile

• Experience building and operating customer-facing software or platforms.
• Experience managing high-performing engineering teams.
• Strong technical judgment across backend services, APIs, distributed systems, cloud infrastructure and production operations.
• Ability to turn complex, ambiguous problems into clear direction, with a founder-minded, decisive approach.
• Clear communication across technical and non-technical audiences, low ego and strong personal accountability.

Required skills

• Python, Go and Ruby services; APIs, distributed systems and asynchronous workflows.
• Databases, AWS, observability and production operations.
• Service migrations, reliability, security and performance.

The hiring process includes an application, a 30-minute introductory conversation, a 60-minute conversation with an Engineering Director, two leadership and technical interviews, and a conversation with the Head of R&D.
