Engineering Manager, Services

About the role

Slice is seeking a high‑agency Engineering Manager to lead the Services team that builds the backend systems, APIs, integrations, and operational capabilities powering the platform. This role is hands‑on, staying close to technology, product, and customers while being accountable for both team performance and business impact.

Key responsibilities

• Own customer and business outcomes by partnering with Product, Design, Data, and Operations to identify high‑value problems.
• Define success through measurable value for pizzerias, customers, and the business.
• Lead technical direction, guiding architecture and engineering decisions across the services owned by the team.
• Build a high‑agency team by providing context, clear decision boundaries, and meaningful ownership.
• Raise execution standards, delivering valuable improvements frequently without sacrificing quality.
• Develop exceptional people: hire, retain, coach, recognize future leaders, and address under‑performance.
• Collaborate across Slice, influencing through judgment and results rather than hierarchy.

Required profile

• Experience building and operating customer‑facing software or platforms.
• Proven track record managing high‑performing engineering teams.
• Strong technical judgment across backend services, APIs, distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and production operations.
• Hands‑on experience with Python, Go, Ruby, or comparable backend technologies.
• Ability to turn complex, ambiguous problems into clear direction.
• Founder‑minded mindset: resourceful, decisive, intellectually curious, and comfortable acting without perfect conditions.
• Low ego, high standards, strong personal accountability, and clear communication across technical and non‑technical audiences.
