Senior QA Automation Engineer (Playwright)

About the role

Valtech is looking for a Senior QA Automation Engineer who designs and owns the Playwright framework, works closely with developers and the client, and uses AI agents as part of building and maintaining tests. The role is independent, with the engineer planning their own work and influencing how the team and the wider QA community operate.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and roll out Playwright (TypeScript/JavaScript) automation frameworks and keep them stable as suites grow
• Test APIs and microservice-based systems alongside the UI
• Run BDD collaboratively with analysts, developers and the client
• Diagnose flaky and intermittent failures and find root causes instead of adding retries
• Use AI coding agents to speed up test design, authoring and maintenance, and verify what they produce
• Help define how AI-assisted and agent-driven testing is done on the project, including instruction files, reusable prompts and review gates
• Extend automation coverage into mobile as the project needs, with support
• Coach colleagues and share what works in the QA community
• Explain quality risk and technical trade-offs clearly to non-technical stakeholders

Required profile

• 5+ years in test automation, including 2+ years of hands-on Playwright with TypeScript/JavaScript in production
• Proven experience defining and implementing a framework architecture, not only extending one
• API automation and microservices testing, with HTTP and network inspection tools
• CI/CD experience with any major pipeline tool
• Practical BDD experience in an Agile team
• A working AI-assisted practice: generating tests with AI and catching tests that pass but prove nothing
• Confidence to question and challenge from a testing perspective, and curiosity to become a subject-matter expert quickly

Required skills

• Strong command of Playwright: fixtures, locator strategy, auto-waiting, network interception and mocking, trace-based debugging, parallel execution
• Testing responsive and mobile-web behavior with Playwright (device emulation, viewports, touch, cross-browser)
• Nice to have: native mobile automation on iOS and/or Android (e.g. Appium with WebdriverIO), another automation stack (Selenium-based or non-JS), multi-step AI agent workflows, performance or cloud testing, mentoring, conference talks or blogging
